Ensure the safety of your pet bird a proper bird cage

Those who owned and raised other pets before, such as dogs or cats, know that a house can have several dangerous spots. Even if one might think some dangers faced by puppies or kittens won’t apply to birds, they too come with their own safety perils. Birds which spend some of their time outside their bird cage would tend to fly around rooms. Unlike other animals, birds can fly into windows or mirrors, self-inflicting injuries and causing damage. Of course, birds can fly through open windows and feel no need for a proper good-bye, never to be seen again! A bird should only be let out of its cage under constant supervision.

One should always expect the unexpected and act accordingly when opening a bird cage and allow its tenant to roam around the house. Some home appliances should be switched off during this period of time. The obvious equipment includes Ceiling Fans, grills, heaters and any other hot surface, electric cords, electric beaters and all sorts of cutting utensils. Of course, if a bird is to remain in its cage, most of these risks do not apply. However birds require and thrive on attention and socialisation with their owners, especially birds like parrots, so when they are let out of their bird cage, owners should bird-proof their homes.

Birds are very sensitive to toxins! Dangerous airborne contaminants coming from cleaners, pesticides and industrial fumes can be fatal to birds. Even strong, aromatic odours can often kill birds! Nail polish, aerosol body sprays, paint fumes and cigarette smoke should be avoided. Even certain food is highly toxic and dangerous for birds. Chocolate, coffee and cocoa contain theobromine, which is very dangerous to birds as to most other pets. Avocado is also toxic and should not be given to any bird. Birds cannot digest salt the way us humans can and food with a high-salt nutrient value can be harmful to them, as can be other high-fat or high-sugar snacks. Although it sounds obvious, one should also state that alcoholic beverages should not be given to birds under any circumstances, as their liver cannot metabolize the alcohol. As most birds also chew on everything small enough to get their beaks on, one should place safe bird toys made of sanitised toxin-free plastics or safe-woods such as manzanita and eucalyptus.

Cages can also pose safety risks to their tenants. Today’s modern cages, especially the larger cages such as a parrot cage, are made of wrought iron and electrostatically powder coated for a long lasting a durable finish. A bird’s home should avoid having lead and zinc components present in most ‘chicken wire’ homemade cages as they cause bird poisoning when chewed upon. These materials should also be avoided in any bird toys and perches placed inside cages.

Finally, birds are not known for their social interaction with other pets, especially cats. Therefore, having cats around can be of a risk to birds even when they are confined within the bird cage boundary. Cats commonly carry Pasteurella bacteria, which is ubiquitous in them and does them no harm. However this is deadly to birds, so even if your cat just bats your bird or gets saliva on it, one should take the bird to nearest vet as soon as possible. Precaution is always better than cure! However one should keep an avian vet’s number always close by just in case.

Using an ionizer to remove odors

Ionizers or carbon scrubbers; what is the best way to get rid of grow odors in hydroponics

If you have grown for any length of time indoors using hydroponics, you know that your plants can smell bad during the flowering cycle. When the plants are flowering you can smell a very distinct aroma that will fill your entire house or grow room. Many find the sent on a flowering plants to be unpleasant and would rather not smell it at all. You will need an effective way of dealing with that odor and eliminating it.

There are two fundamental ways to deal with the grow odors in a hydroponics application. That it is safe and effective carbon scrubber which would always be my first choice. And then there are the electronic and technical air ionizers. Both of these types of equipment used in your hydroponics applications will help you deal with that foul odor. A typical set up would run both with an ionizer and an Active Carbon scrubber simultaneously to get best results. However it is important to understand the difference between these pieces of equipment and how they should be applied to your hydroponics grow box application.

Carbon scrubber is safe to have around your plants. It removes odors from the room by forcing air through a series of activated charcoal to reduce bad odors naturally and safely. When air with odors is forced through the charcoal, it loses its odors thanks to the carbon. So carbon scrubbers are very good way to keep odors down in a hydroponics grow. When looking at hydroponics grow box machine you should always go with the unit that has a nice large carbon scrubber and squirrel cage blower fan attached to it. That ensures the grow box will properly remove odors.

Now there can be an additional need for ionizers for persistent amount of odors. Using in ionizer around your plants or around your pet is dangerous to their health. We do not recommend using an ionizer where anybody is going to be living in the grow area. Air ionizers should only be used in crawl spaces or area that is free of life. You can use an in-line ionizer which will connect to 8″ inch tubing hose blowing hot air from your light can be passed over the ionizer to get rid of the odors. An ionizer is far more advanced grower and should not be messed around with by beginners. We caution you that there are dangers of using an ionizer in your hydroponics grow and we highly recommend using a much safer carbon scrubber to get rid of odors from your grow box safely.

Over the years, medical device cleanrooms have become more cost effective in both initial cost and operating cost due to advances in technology and methods.

My first experience with cleanrooms was in 1967 with the first laminar flow room built for Honeywell’s Solid State Electronics Center in Plymouth, Minnesota. That room has been in constant use for 39 years. There were no filter changes in those 39 years. The system was upgraded with ULPA (ultra low penetration air) filters in 2004 even though the HEPA(high efficiency particulate air) filters were not loaded.

Then in the early 1970s, Medtronic built their headquarter campus on the north side of the Twin Cities. Manufacturing was moved from St. Anthony to the new campus and a new cleanroom. This room was the first cleanroom for medical device manufacturing in the area. It was a “unidirectional” cross flow design. It has been in continuous use since it was constructed. In the beginning, a cross flow design was selected because all the manufacturing was done in one room, with the dirtier operations in the return end and the final assembly, cleaning and packaging near the supply wall.

Throughout the next 15 years or so, medical device cleanrooms used ducted modular Hepa Filter systems and walls constructed of gypsum and coated with epoxy paint. The Class 10,000 room was the norm for medical device manufacturing. The filtration system began to change in the 1980s with the introduction in 1983 of the fan-filter unit by Envirco, Inc. in Albuquerque, NM. At first, it was thought this system would be too noisy for most operations, but over time this objection disappeared as the new unit proved to be very quiet. Today, over 90% of medical device cleanrooms use the fan-filter system. The reasons are straightforward:

• Lower first cost.
• Lower energy consumption.
• Easier to add or subtract HEPA filtered airflow to any space.
• Easier to take the investment in filtration to a new location.

Fan-filter units today have two basic motor-drive systems: a) permanent split capacitor motor and b) DC motor with built-in rectification from AC supply voltage. The DC motor option lowers energy consumption while maintaining airflow throughout the life of the HEPA filters. The motor automatically adjusts rpm to deliver constant flow through the HEPA filter. One change in medical device cleanrooms that we are beginning to see in our market area is the use of a low cost control system that offers unoccupied set-back of the system airflow. For systems with 40 hours per week peak flow usage, this system pays back the investment quickly. The system also identifies units that are not working and allows for setting individual Fan Speed from the control console.

Another change we have seen in the past eight years in medical device cleanrooms is the use of modular wall systems. Typically, a large manufacturing area is defined by occupancy separation walls with interior walls being constructed of a cleanroom panel system. This technique is being used because the device manufacturer can’t afford down time for changes to the wall systems. One large manufacturer of implantable devices modifies their wall systems about 20 times per year. Walls are added, moved, and removed all while the cleanroom maintains the cleanliness rating. Technicians are gowned up appropriately and all materials and tools cleaned outside the room before the wall modification begins. By using a modular wall system, the cost of the walls disappears when compared to shutting down a large manufacturing operation for a day or so due to dust created by gypsum walls and painting.

The Clean Workstation

The class 10,000 room has be the standard for medical device manufacturing for the past 30 years or so. But this too may be changing. About four years ago, Medtronic asked Gerbig Engineering to develop and manufacture a clean workstation specifically for medical device assembly. After a couple of prototypes were constructed the design was finalized. The new workstation offered many new ideas in device assembly.

• Double sided airflow with two fans and two HEPA filters. More assembly area per dollar invested.
• Smaller HEPA filter area; only the first few inches above the work surface has HEPA filtered airflow. This reduces heat gain and total energy, but still offers contamination protection superior to conventional assembly stations.
• Putting the airflow at the work surface means fewer HEPA units in the ceiling. In our prototype test, particle counts below 3000 were recorded in an office environment. Less than 100 particles were measured in a Class 10,000 room. Using the clean workstation approach, the room could be designed as a Class 100,000 or unclassified with HEPA filters in the air handling system, while the work area itself can be class 10,000 or better.
• The assembly workstation has quick connects for compressed air and electrical circuits to pass from station to station eliminating drops from the ceiling.
• Using a shorter HEPA filter allows for storage or monitors to be mounted at a more usable height.

Today, with the advances in clean room construction and controls, a manufacturer needs to make sure that they are considering all options before investing in a clean room. A little time researching and using an expert system designer work out the specifications, one could realize thousands of dollars in startup as well as on going costs,.

Fred T. Gerbig, PE, has been involved with both the cleanroom industry and HVAC systems for the past 33 years. In 1985, Fred started Gerbig Engineering Company specializing in contamination control. The Company designs, builds, and certifies cleanrooms. In addition, the company performs validation work for GMP facilities and designs high purity gas and water systems. Mr. Gerbig has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, both from Iowa State University (1964).

As an active member of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), he was the secretary of subcommittee RP-50 for updating Federal Standard 209B to 209D and was the Secretary for IES subcommittee RP-006 to standardize the testing of cleanrooms. Mr. Gerbig was awarded the 1986 “James R. Mildon Award” for outstanding contributions to the Institute of Environmental Sciences Contamination Control Division. He holds a patent in the field of Air Filtration.

Rid Basements of Mold and Mildew With Epoxy Encapsulation

Many older homes and buildings have developed dangerous levels of spores from mold and mildew growing in basement walls and floors. To be free of those health hazards and to avoid them returning encapsulation is being used more and more frequently. Plaster and lath, cement block, poured cement footings and other basement surfaces often get wet or damp. The microscopic cavities in many basement wall and floor surfaces become a natural place for spores to grow. Those odors and heavy air you breath when in some basement areas can now be made fresh and kept that way. The trick is to kill the growth and then seal the pores so that even if wet there is no place for contaminants to grow. Think of a plastic picnic plate. The plastic air dries quickly and there is no place for growths to hide.

To encapsulate your basement surfaces you first need to clean them. A grit type swivel scrub brush works well for your walls. We first use a high alkaline cleaner and water to scrub all the surfaces. If you have a floor surface it is easiest to use a rotary scrubber similar to what a school custodian would use but your scrub brush can do the job with some effort. Now, use your wet dry vacuum to suck up the detergent water and dirt. If you have a floor drain use your squeegee to get it to the drain. Often there is some foam and a defoamer can help save time but just put it in your vacuum or directly in the drain. You don’t want the silicones in the defoamer to create an adhesion problem for your coating. Next, use an acidic cleaner with rinse agents and detergents. This will open up your surfaces for good adhesion. You may want to use a vapor mask for the acidic cleaning as some annoying vapors may result. Scrub rinse and don’t hesitate to use plenty of water. I like to use a garden hose. People are often surprised in those old basement areas to find that yes they do have cement floors, that was just decades of dirt over them. Now let the surfaces dry thoroughly. You may need to pump Fresh Air into the area with fans because the closed areas may develop a dew point that just hates to let the surface dry.

Now comes the fun part, encapsulating the surfaces with epoxy floor seal. For very rough surfaces with plaster holes, craggy stone or cement 100% epoxy may be needed. You can brush, or roll it on but the best way is to spray if you want all pits and gaps to be filled. This is a two-coat process so don’t be worried if you see your coating sinking out of site. Allow each coat to cure 15 hours. Screening the floor between coats is often a good idea. Your drips from the walls, and grains of wall surface that continue to drop onto the floor during application should be shaved off for a smooth easy to keep clean floor surface.

Because you did an aggressive cleaning job before your epoxy application you can be assured that most of your mold and mildew died under the jump from a pH level of 12 then 3.5 pH then back to neutral at 6.5 to 7 pH. Any organisms left are encapsulated Jurassic Park style as though in amber, save behind your epoxy barrier. Now if your basement walls and floor get damp, they will dry quickly and leave no little homes for your unwanted microscopic guests.
